Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana’s Origin

Started in 1985, as a part of the Rural Landless Employment Guarantee Programme (RLEGP), Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) i.e. a part of other Pradhan Mantri Yojana. Later it was subsumed in Jawahar Rozgar Yojana (JRY) in 1989. It has been operating as an independent scheme since 1 January 1996. In 1993-94 this scheme was furthermore extended to Non-SC/ST categories also. From 1995–96 the scheme has been further extended to widows or next-of-kin of defense personnel killed in action, ex-servicemen and retired members of the paramilitary forces.

Under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2020 financial assistance worth Rs. 70,000-75,000 has been sanctioned for the construction of houses in difficult areas. These houses are facilitated with toilet, LPG connection, electricity connection, and drinking water. The houses constructed under PMGAY are allotted on the name of women or jointly between husband & wife. Above all houses are the sole responsibility of the beneficiary and engagement of contractors is strictly prohibited. As a result of the construction of Sanitary latrine and smokeless challah, additional financial assistance is provided from the “Total Sanitation Campaign” and “Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana” respectively.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) Purpose and Implementation
